For the European leg of U2's ZooTV tour during the early '90s, Bono built on Bowie's over-the-top rock-star creation with his take on the devil MacPhisto. Seeking to distance himself from the almost earnest morality of the band's Joshua Tree era, Bono imagined the devil as an aging glam rocker who had long ago sold his soul, complete with gold suit, white pancake makeup and horns. MacPhisto performed as part of each set, waxing poetic about politics and morality.
